Aurora
Aurora’s picturesque hills and ample woods provide the perfect backdrop for suburban life. However, unlike many suburbs, this town is shaped by its proximity to the protected lands of the Oak Ridges Moraine. One of the most significant headwaters in Canada, it supports over 65 rivers and streams flowing into Lake Ontario and Simcoe. The landscape of Aurora plays an important role in protecting the delicate ecosystem, while enhancing the allure of the stunning neighbourhoods.
About Aurora
With over 50,000 people living in the town of Aurora, it has become a fast-growing municipality in the GTA. Its charm and easy drive from the city attract both home buyers and businesses looking for an affordable place to call home. With over 100 major industries operating in the area, company headquarters for companies such as Magna and State Farm are boosting the town’s employment. The town’s higher than average income also adds to the level of education available including the prestigious St. Andrew’s College.
Aurora’s town hall brings a modern touch to the area with its edgy architectural design. The scenery is not limited to the natural surroundings but includes the town’s historic downtown, picture-perfect homes and well-maintained streets and public spaces. Major retailers and restaurants have also arrived in town, adding to the comfortable lifestyle. This family-oriented community is just 40 minutes north of Toronto offering an idyllic place to buy a home or start a family.
Aurora Real Estate Market & History
Aurora was originally named by the first local merchant who used his own name, Machell to create Machell’s Corner. The town was renamed in 1854 after the Greek Goddess of Dawn and was first incorporated as a village in 1863. As the village grew it reached the status of town in 1888. In 1854 the first train arrived in Aurora opening opportunities for growth.
The railway and local agriculture lead to the establishment of several factories and two newspapers. The town has proudly maintained its heritage winning both the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership and the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership in heritage conservation and promotion.
Aurora Real Estate
Like many of Ontario’s rural towns, Aurora real estate is enhanced by its heritage offering a delightful selection of historic homes. Concentrated mainly in Downtown Aurora you can mark the era the homes were built based on the architectural designs from Georgian to Greek Revival and Victorian to Edwardian. Curb appeal is dominant in the older areas of town with the distinctive elegance and character only found in historic homes.
However, there is no shortage of charm in the newer homes, many of which are also located in the downtown core. Affordable semi-detached and townhomes are more prevalent here, while newer subdivisions further out offer larger, detached homes. This includes many executive enclaves catering to those with higher budgets and the desire for luxurious living. Mid-century homes, ranches, and bungalows from the 60s and 70s are found on mature streets with manicured lawns and professionally landscaped gardens.
You will also find many low-rise condos listed for Aurora real estate offering extremely affordable options in family friendly neighbourhoods. Highly stylized recent builds show off their ultra-contemporary designs and impressive upgrades.
