Markham
The City of Markham has embraced the art of New Urbanism principles maintaining the unique character of its original neighbourhoods. As a result, the city provides a sense of unity from street to street. Heritage areas such as Markham Village and Unionville attract visitors to their historic main streets filled with one of a kind shopping and dining experiences. However, Markham has also grown nicely into the modern era, dubbing itself the High-Tech Capital of Canada. While other areas might make the same claim, the arrival of major players including Apple, IBM, Toshiba, and ATT are a testament to the city’s ability to attract impressive employers. Other companies of note including Honda, American Express and TD Waterhouse also have Canadian headquarters here.
About Markham
Jobs, leadership in sustainability, thoughtful city building, and a commitment to supporting the diversity of the multicultural population have created a city with a bright future. With a population of over 350,000, the city continues to grow, attracting people from Toronto who enjoy its combination of rural charm and urban amenities.
Family life is idyllic in the many towns of Markham, with a selection of homes both historic and modern, and the home to some of the top public schools within York region and Toronto. Located north of Toronto at the 404 and Warden, its proximity to Toronto makes it an easy commute. Many people happily live and work in Markham. The smart growth of the city has allowed it to provide a highly desirable quality of life for its residents with a community that is inclusive and welcoming.
Markham Real Estate Market & History
When Markham Township was settled in 1794 the population was just sixty-four families. The families were granted free land in exchange for their labour to clear land for roads and waterways. Other groups arrived in the area creating an agricultural industry as well as grist and wool mills. By 1857 the land was cleared of its timber making way for land ready for cultivation. The area supported not only farming but farm equipment manufacturing, tanners, and furniture factories. The Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company built stations in Unionville and Markham in 1871 bringing rampant growth and prosperity. The Village was incorporated in 1873. Following World War II, the area attracted a diverse selection of immigrants. Urban development accelerated with the opening of the 404 in the mid-1970s. After becoming a city in 2012, Markham is now the 16th largest city in Canada.
Markham Real Estate
Markham’s long history has left its mark on local real estate. This is one of the most intriguing factors in the city as its neighbourhoods each tell a story based on their own architectural style. As a result, you will find stunning heritage homes including the towns earliest homes and buildings which demonstrate the classic Georgian style with their unique sense of simplicity and symmetry. Influences are seen throughout each area including Rome inspired neoclassical, the high ceilings and French doors of Regency homes, sweet one-story cottages, highly ornamental designs of the Gothic and Italianate era and the cozy Cape Cod homes popular in the 1950s.
Home buyers also have their choice of subdivisions built between the 1970s and 90s as well as new builds. All areas try to adhere to the original character of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
Markham Lifestyle
Markham’s diverse selection of homes has attracted both families and couples seeking a quieter lifestyle outside of Toronto. Most households earn well above the average Canadian income topping $89,000 annually. Multi-culturalism has provided a rich tapestry of local businesses including a diverse selection of dining experiences.
A strong Asian population makes Markham a destination for some of the best, most authentic Chinese cuisine in the GTA. Mom and pop run Wonton Hut at Markham Town Square is a local casual favourite serving up hearty soups and noodles. Casa Victoria is known for its mouth-watering selection of Cantonese dim sum. You’ll also find a diverse selection of restaurants to tempt any palate including upscale dining at Smash Kitchen and Bar, outstanding Italian at Folco’s, down to earth casual fare at the famous Jake’s and a classic steak house at The Octagon.
