Newmarket
Newmarket has earned its name as the “Heart of York Region” with its ideal location, notable historic sites, and welcoming family atmosphere. As its title implies, its central location in York keeps everything you need close providing the conveniences of the city and the quieter lifestyle of the north.
About Newmarket
Adding to the area’s picturesque appeal, the Holland River adds a whimsical touch to the area as it winds its way through the town. Fairy Lake is a popular spot just east of Newmarket’s charming downtown where people walk their dogs and enjoy the views while they picnic and play. Newmarket also posts an exceptional health care facility at the Southlake Regional Health Centre and one of Ontario’s top private schools, Pickering College.
Water Street is a walk back in time with charming buildings many of which are marked with plaques to point out their historic or architectural significance. With the Holland River close by many neighbourhoods bring you close to nature. The city is committed to maintaining the charm of its neighborhoods by studying the characters of its established streets and home styles. Their plan is to ensure new builds do not overtake older areas and ruin the distinct features of the homes.
Newmarket Real Estate Market & History
Newmarket was first explored by Timothy Rogers in 1800 in search of an ideal spot for a Quaker Settlement. The first gristmill was built the following year at Fairy Lake. The arrival of the first railroad in what was then known as Upper Canada began servicing the area in 1853. This allowed for easier transportation to and from the area, opening opportunity for more businesses, farmers, and families to settle here. Companies that contributed to local prosperity included the Davis Tannery, Office Specialty and the Cane Furniture and Pencil Factory. In 1857 Newmarket became a village and in 1880 it became a town. Between the 1950s and 70s subdivisions were built providing much of the homes here today. Expansion of the town included the development of more commercial space attracting more businesses establishing Newmarket as an opportunity for commerce and living.
Newmarket Real Estate
Newmarket real estate tends to attract different demographics to its three “sections.” In Central Newmarket for example you will find mostly older homeowners over the age of 40 who were attracted to the area due to its large homes, schools, and shopping. It is a family-centric section of town despite the average age tending to be higher. In West Newmarket young families are attracted to the amenities for active lifestyles as well as the schools. East Newmarket attracts even younger families and couples as amenities and shopping are a bit more of a trek compared to the other areas.
The older established areas such as Armitage and Bristol-London offer mature trees, larger detached houses, and an assortment of semis. If you are looking for newer housing, such as condos or townhouses, these homes are plentiful in Woodland Hills where homes are smaller and newer.
Newmarket Lifestyle
Newmarket is a town with an above average income where most residents own their homes. It is a prosperous town where people have settled and stayed in their forever homes. One of the attractions to the area is its commitment to being green. Many new housing developments follow the LEED initiative to create more environmentally friendly and energy efficient housing. It also has over 44 kilometers of bike trails providing an alternative to driving.
With a perfect balance of the urban amenities people need and rural charm, Newmarket offers a laid-back lifestyle ideal for people of all walks and ages. While its average age in town is 40, many young families are finding their way here. The town continues to grow much in part due to its convenient location with access to all major GTA highways. It also has improved public transit on the way with the extension of the vivaNext rapid transit system to bring residents to neighbouring communities.
